Markets end flat ahead of Fed decision; FPIs buy shares worth ₹4,240 crore
NSE moved lower.
· Business Standard Mkts
Benchmark stock indices Sensex and Nifty closed largely unchanged in a highly volatile trade on Tuesday amid profit-taking in IT and blue-chip banking shares, elevated crude oil prices and caution ahead of the US Federal Reserve's policy decision. The 30-share BSE Sensex slipped 8.08 points, or 0.01 per cent, to close at 73,598.67, with 17 constituents higher, 12 lower and one unchanged.
The analysis
NSE reported ₹4,240 crore, with movement of 1%, 0.01% and 0.02% attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is -1.0% on the day at ₹961.85, and has returned -6.2% over three months. It sits 22% below its 52-week high. The banks sector has moved -6.0% over the same period, so State Bank of India is running 0.2 points behind its peers.
This is an Input cost / crude event. India imports most of its crude, so input costs pass through to margins downstream and to the rupee. Producers and consumers of the same input move in opposite directions. On the day the stock is -1.0%, so a modest reaction.
Why it matters
- With NSE, BSE involved, this carries a regulatory dimension that can outlast the immediate market reaction.
Market context
- 4 of the 6 companies named are in Banks, so the story reads across that sector rather than for one company.
- On the day, 4 of 6 are higher: HDFC Bank leads at +1.4% and State Bank of India trails at -1.0%.
- Over three months: State Bank of India -6.2% against Banks -6.0% (0.2 points behind); Axis Bank -1.0% against Banks -6.0% (5.0 points ahead); Tata Consultancy +2.9% against IT -3.1% (6.0 points ahead); Asian Paints -15.5% against Paints & Building Materials -15.3% (0.2 points behind).
- At least 25% below the 52-week high: HDFC Bank (31%).
