Tata Motors finds task cut out for Iveco turnaround after twin losses

Tata Motors pursued an acquisition.

· LiveMint Companies

Iveco lost €45 million in the September quarter, its second quarterly loss this year, just as Tata Motors took control. Tata must now turn it around while carrying acquisition debt and honouring conditions that block immediate restructuring.

Against that, the stock is -0.8% on the day at ₹425.50, and has returned -7.4% over three months. It sits 16% below its 52-week high. The auto sector has moved -6.3% over the same period, so Tata Motors is running 1.1 points behind its peers.

This is an Asset quality / margins event. For lenders the headline profit is the least informative line. Slippages, credit cost and margin direction determine whether the quarter is repeatable. On the day the stock is -0.8%, so a modest reaction.

For Tata Motors, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the auto peer set alongside it.

  • In focus: Tata Motors (TMCV), in Auto.
  • Over three months: Tata Motors -7.4% against Auto -6.3% (1.1 points behind).
