Rs 9,000 crore wiped out in a day: Why Swiggy investors are losing patience with Instamart
Swiggy secured new business in a quarterly results development.
· Economic Times Markets, ET Stocks
Swiggy shares plunged on Friday, wiping out around ₹9,000 crore in market value as widening Instamart losses overshadowed food delivery growth. Following Q2 results, brokerages cut their price targets, citing deteriorating quick-commerce profitability.
The analysis
Swiggy reported Rs 9,000 crore, ₹895 crore and ₹778 crore, with movement of -1.4% and 13.4% attached to those lines. Those are the figures as filed — what moves the price is how they sit against what the market already expected, not their absolute size.
Against that, the stock is -4.7% on the day at ₹176.60, and has returned -40.3% over three months. It sits 58% below its 52-week high, which means a good deal of bad news was already in the price. The hotels & restaurants sector has moved -0.9% over the same period, so Swiggy is running 39.4 points behind its peers.
For Swiggy, the question is how much of this is already reflected in the price and how much re-rates the hotels & restaurants peer set alongside it.
Why it matters
- Earnings versus expectations is what actually re-rates a stock; the surprise matters more than the absolute number.
